Cost MPG is our attempt to provide an intuitive way to compare fuel cost of different types of vehicles. We could have used $/100 miles or miles/$100, but the popularity of MPG led us to invent this criteria. For any vehicle, Cost MPG is the number of (combined highway and city) miles for the fuel cost equal to that of 1 gallon of gasoline.
| Vehicle Type | Cost MPG Formula |
|---|---|
| Diesel | (Vehicle miles per gallon) * (price 1 gallon gasoline) / (price 1 gallon diesel) |
| CNG | (Vehicle miles per GGE) * (price 1 gallon gasoline) / (price 1 GGE CNG) |
| Hydrogen | (Vehicle miles per GGE) * (price 1 gallon gasoline) / (price 1 GGE hydrogen) |
| Electric | (Vehicle miles per Kwh) * (price 1 gallon gasoline) * 0.85 / (price 1 Kwh electricity) Assumes battery charger efficiency of 85% |
CNG and hydrogen are sold in units of GGE or Gasoline Gallon Equivalents.
